How To Clean Carpeting

Knowing how to clean carpeting is one of the few annoyances you have to put up with when deciding to install a traditional carpet flooring over a much easier to clean wood, marble, or other hard wood floor.  Keeping your carpet clean is not only important from an aesthetic standpoint but clean carpets are also a key to eliminating indoor mold problems. Nevertheless, if you follow a few simple rules, the job shouldn't be too difficult.

There are many types of carpets available and the specific cleaning and care of them will not always be the same. But there are some general guidelines that apply to pretty much all carpets and rugs.

First, taking care of your carpet and making it easy to clean begins when you first install it. You should have a weekly carpet care routine where you vacuum it at least once a week. In heavy traffic areas you should vacuum more often. And when you spill something on the carpet, you should clean it immediately. Also, it's not a bad idea to make it a practice to remove your shoes when coming in from outdoors. Put your shoes on a doormat near the door and put on a pair of indoor slippers instead.

Doing these three simple things will prevent dirt and dust from building up in your carpet and it will prevent stains from becoming permanent.  And when you finally do get around to cleaning the carpet,  your job will go much faster and easier.

Steam Cleaning Your Carpet

A good wet cleaner machine or a steamer is very important when cleaning carpets. The steamer can remove the deep seated dust in your carpet efficiently and thoroughly. If you want to buy one, you'll find many types of wet-cleaner machine in the hardware and department stores. Brands and styles are always changing so do your research before buying a carpet steamer and choose a brand that has a history of quality. Furthermore, when buying a wet cleaner machine, make sure that you test it before buying. Ask the salesclerk to demonstrate the use of the cleaner and try it yourself to make sure that you feel comfortable handling it.

If you're on a budget and can't afford to buy your own steamer, you'll have no problems renting one from a local hardware store. In many communities, you can also rent carpet steamers from grocery stores. In most cases, the cleaning materials and instructions on how to clean carpeting are already included. Although, you will probably have to buy the cleaning products separately.

The biggest mistake that homeowners make when using a steam cleaner is over saturating the carpet. Wet carpet can emit some offensive smells and also can significantly increase the drying time. So make it a point to control the amount of water and cleaning solution that you put on your carpet.

And lastly, there may be some stains and odors, such as cat or dog urine, that normal cleaning may not remove. For these deep stains you will have to find the appropriate spot cleaner to complete the job.
