Installing Pergo Flooring
Compared to installing normal hardwood flooring, installing Pergo flooring is a piece of cake
Pergo flooring is a great looking floor. It's been available in the U.S. marketplace for over 14 years and in Swed for at lesat 10 years earlier. It has become a real flooring alternative for people that want the look of a hardwood floor without the expense. In addition, Pergo is almost maintenance free.
What makes installing Pergo flooring so easy is that you don't need glue, you don't need grout, and you don't need a nail gun. Pergo is a laminate type of flooring. Every laminate flooring manufacturer is going to have their own particular guidelines and installation procedures, and Pergo is no different. In most cases, you install Pergo flooring over your main flooring. But read the instructions to be certain. If you have concrete floors, you will probably have to install a sub-flooring. It's also important that your sub-floor be level with no bumps.
Pergo flooring comes in planks. You can purchase it in glueless or pre-applied glue. Their is a slight difference in the installation process. With the glueless type, the planks are designed to "float" over your existing floor. This means that the Pergo pieces are snapped together and laid over a thin foam pad - over which it will "float". The foam pad is also meant to act as a moisture barrier. But it also adds helps to muffle sounds and to cushion the foot traffic. The sound of hard heels on a Pergo floor can be rather loud, so you may be interested in purchasing a "sound dampening" type of padding which results in much quieter foot traffic noise.
The Pergo flooring with the pre-applied glue is installed similarly. The basic difference is that they are first glued together and then placed over the subfloor. The manufacturers have really made the Pergo installation process as simple as it can be.
In planning your installation, you need to give yourself some lead time. You can't begin to install immediately after bringing the planks home from the home center. Before installing, it's very important to let the planks acclimate to the temperature of the area where they will be installed. You should remove the covering and let them "breathe" and adjust to their new environment for at least two or three days if possible. Failure to do so may result in the floors buckling once you've installed them.
For most, installation will not be a problem. But, if you really do feel nervous about it and consider yourself to be all thumbs, you'll have no difficulty finding a professional to install it for you at a very reasonable price.
Pergo flooring is a really great option for almost any room in the home and. Don't let the installation process scare you. You'll find that it's easier than you imagined.
