To start you first have to know how much vinyl flooring to buy. Begin by measuring the room you are going to install it in. Vinyl is sold by the square yard, so you'll want to know the dimensions of your room in square yardage terms. You'll also need adhesive for the vinyl which you can buy at the same time as the vinyl. And you'll need a floor roller, which you can rent from the flooring center or your local hardware store. As you lay the vinyl, you'll need the roller to push all of the air bubbles from beneath the vinyl to make sure that it stays flat and adheres to the floor surface.
If you already have a workshop in your home, You probably already have most of the remaining tools that you will need They include - trowel, utility knife, and straight edge.
Remove all of the furniture from the room and begin to prepare the floors. Vinyl an be laid directly on practically any floor. The important thing is to make sure that the floor is clean and level with no bumps. If the floor is not level, you can buy . a liquid leveler, a self leveling liquid product that your pour on the floor. It will dry to create a hard level surface that is perfect for bonding. If you floor has bumps in it, you can sand them down. Of, if you simply don't want to install the vinyl flooring directly over the old floor, you can create a subfloor of plywood and install the vinyl flooring over it.
Now you need to cut the vinyl flooring. The easiest way to do this is to take your previously recorded floor measurements and make a "draft cut" of the vinyl. This cut will be approximately 3 inches longer and 3 inches wider that your measured length and width. This gives you a fudge factor for mistakes and uneven floor lengths.
Prepare to install by laying the the vinyl floor on top of your floor in the position where you want it. Fold back the vinyl floor in half, revealing the half of the floor where you will begin to lay the vinyl. Follow the adhesive instructions and lay it on exposed half of the floor. Use your trowel to smooth the adhesive over the entire exposed area to ensure that you have good coverage. You may have to wait a few minutes for the adhesive to become tacky before laying the floor. Follow the instructions that came with the adhesive. Then lay the floor over the adhesive.
Use the roller to roll out the excess air beneath the installed vinyl flooring and to make sure that all parts of it are in contact with the the subfloor. Then simply do the same for the remaining half of the floor and install the remaining vinyl.
Along the way, you may have to cut portions of the vinyl to fit around cabinets or pipes. If so, make the cuts before laying the adhesive.
